Boston Marathon is April 18th and training this year has been brutal. After hundreds of miles of running through snow and ice I have come out the other side rather worse for wear. My body is beaten up and I am tired. But my children know that qualifying and having the coveted number is not what Boston is about. It is a tough course and training alone does not get me to the finish line. It requires grit and that comes from running for someone else.
On April 18th I am running with Team Joslin for Edward Richardson, a 17 year-old friend who has Type 1 Diabetes. Type 1 diabetes can’t be prevented or managed with diet, exercise or oral medications. Instead, it requires artificial insulin through injections to stay alive. It requires the constant, unwavering attention of Edward and his parents to every aspect of Edward's life - his meals, lifestyle, exercise, sleep pattern and medication. It requires unyielding willpower and self-restraint.
Edward is my Grit and my Boston 2011. My wish is that one day soon Edward will be able to run without a care and that his mother, Annie, can stop worrying. I am excited to be part of Team Joslin to support The Joslin Center for Diabetes' greatest needs in research, education and clinical care.
Please join me in supporting Team Joslin and Edward for giving me my Grit.
